There is nothing you need to prepare.
Beginning therapy is a big step, and not knowing what to expect makes it harder than it needs to be. Here is everything, laid out plainly.
Mostly, I listen.
I listen deeply to your concerns and collect the information that helps me understand your situation. We then use that, together, to develop a treatment plan that feels right to you.
You will not be handed a protocol. You will not be asked to relive anything you are not ready to. Together we will create a safe space for you to begin your journey toward healing.
-
You reach out
Send a message through the contact page, or call. Tell me as much or as little as you like about what is going on.
-
We have a brief conversation
A short call to hear what you are looking for and to see whether I am the right fit. No cost, no obligation.
-
We schedule a first session
I will send any intake paperwork ahead of time so we can spend the session talking rather than filling out forms.
-
We decide together where to go
By the end of the first meeting we will have a shared sense of the work ahead and a plan you actually agree with.
Clear numbers, no surprises.
You should know what therapy will cost before you commit to it. If cost is a barrier, say so. It is a normal thing to discuss and I would rather talk about it than have you quietly stop coming.

Your right to a Good Faith Estimate
Under the No Surprises Act, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate explaining how much your care will cost. Clients who are uninsured or who are not using insurance are entitled to an estimate in writing before services begin, and may request one at any time. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your estimate, you can dispute it. For more information, visit cms.gov/nosurprises.
Things people often want to ask.
How do I know if I need therapy?
There is no threshold of suffering you have to clear first. If something in your life is causing you pain, or if you are simply curious about yourself and want a thoughtful companion for that inquiry, that is reason enough. You do not need a diagnosis to deserve support.
How long does therapy take?
It depends entirely on what you are working on and what you want from it. Some people come for a focused stretch to get through a specific situation. Others stay longer because depth work takes time. We will talk openly about this as we go, and you are free to stop whenever you choose.
What if I do not know what to say?
That is genuinely common, and it is not a problem. Silence is allowed here. So is starting in the middle, or with something that seems trivial. I am never pushy, and I will not sit there waiting for you to perform. We can start with why it is hard to start.
Is what I say confidential?
Yes. What you share in session is protected. There are a small number of legal exceptions that apply to all licensed therapists, including serious risk of harm to yourself or another person, and suspected abuse of a child, elder, or dependent adult. I will go over these with you at the start so nothing is a surprise.
Can we talk about faith or spirituality?
Absolutely, if you want to. I respect all dimensions of who you are, including matters of spirituality, and I draw on transpersonal approaches when they fit. I will not impose a framework on you, and if spirituality is not part of your life, we simply will not go there.
Will you tell me what to do?
Not usually, because advice rarely holds up against the complexity of a real life. What I will do is help you understand yourself well enough to make your own choice with more clarity. That said, I am a real person in the room, and when sharing my own experience is genuinely relevant to your problem, I will.
What if we are not a good fit?
Then we will name it, without awkwardness. Fit matters more than anything else in therapy. If someone else would serve you better, I will help you find them.
Do you see couples or families?
Confirm whether Jon sees couples and families, or individuals only. My training as a marriage and family therapist means I always keep your relationships in view, even in individual work.
Still have a question?
Ask it. I would rather answer a question now than have it be the reason you do not reach out.
